Information source: The one on my desk after an lsusb and some poking around. Not sure what more can be said that's relevant, so I'll just list what I know.
Unsure of the actual chip used, not willing to take a pickaxe to the device to find out (snap-together case, only screws are in the "feet", and I'd bet those don't even open it.)
It's probably a microcontroller, because certain 8-byte sequences to report ID 0 can cause it to lock up and require a power-cycle, so the chip isn't relevant anyway.
